My mom the volunteer...

Click on picture for larger view. My mother & step-dad make the paper. He is the first from the far left & my mom is the 3rd from the left holding the rake. "Go MOM"
No arrest, fighting or drug charges. haha. Trust me you will never see that on here with their name attached. The article explains it.

Here is what my cousin Opal Lewis Meek sent out looking for help.

"The Town of Hollywood has a Clean Up Day Scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2009, and plans to have a Dumpster at the Hollywood Crossroads which will take old furniture, limbs, old flowers, stands, etc. but no tires, oil, paint, batteries, or household trash will be accepted.

The Old Baptist Cemetery located on County Road 42 in Hollywood, AL, will have Clean Up Day on Saturday, March 7, beginning at 9 a.m. For more information call Pat Harding Womack at 256 - 599-0519 or 256 - 575-2727. Bring your own work tools.

Please come out and support all this clean up effort and especially the Old Baptist Cemetery. This is the white cemetery which has no perpetual care. The Black Old Baptist Cemetery there has perpetual care. The Sheriff's Department recently did a tremendous amount of cleanup of the white portion as coordinated by Pat Harding Womack and the Town of Hollywood provided the food to feed the inmates. We will need to really work to keep the cemetery looking nice. The inmates have cleaned up before but the mimosa trees really take over fast and so does the sage grass.

All help and support is greatly appreciated. Looking forward to seeing you there."

Irish Blessings

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

These things, I warmly wish for you-
Someone to love,
Some work to do,
A bit of o’ sun
A bit o’ cheer
And a guardian angel
Always near.
May your troubles be less
And your blessing be more
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door
May your blessings outnumber
The Shamrocks that grow
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day

My Mother

One of the many things I do is keep the e-mail address list up to date for my Sunday School class. If anything needs to be sent out to an individual or as a whole I can do it. Most of the time it is a prayer request. We have a really large ladies class & we consider ourselves Prayer Warriors. Prayer is something my whole class takes very much to heart. We know without a doubt that the Lord is who you turn to for the answer to any problem you could ever have. Of all the prayer request I send out, today's to my class was for my mother. Here is what it said.

I have sent prayer request for different people but now this one is mine.
My mother (Catherine Adkins-64 years old) had been sick for a few days. She was thinking flu. She had a doctor’s appointment today. I have had my own prayer for some time that she along with my sister would give up smoking. The doctor informs her today if she does not that she will have to start breathing treatments. Her lungs after smoking for so long have become weak. My mother is now willing to lay her cigarettes on the altar & leave it to God to help her. Along with His help she thinks she can kick the habit. She has smoked for at least 48 years, give or take a few years of trying to kick it.
Please put my mother in your prayers for her to be able to QUIT for good.
My sister has yet to get a bad report but throw in a few words for my sister to be convicted to lay hers down.
My mother’s husband (Homer Adkins) had also been sick so they made double appointments & he was seen also. He is prone to get pneumonia really easy but the doctor says it is just a cold. Stay in, take some meds & he should be feeling better in a few days.
I will keep you updated a little later on of her progress.
The Lord is blessing us with a beautiful weekend so that should help matters.

If you have any words of encouragement my mother would love to have you e-mail her.

Leave your words under my comment section & she will read them here.

National Signing Day

Oh how I love my talented family. My sister sent me an e-mail about her granddaughter. AKA my great-neice. We sure do have some talent running through our blood line.

"Our granddaughter, Hayley Alden, was all over the news in South Bend today, along with many of her fellow players from Penn H.S., and signed to play soccer at Indiana State next fall. We are really proud of her for her achievements especially this yr. She has been awarded sport and academic awards.
Click on her name (about 6 down) and the video should come up on the right of your screen."

‘Little Deere’ loader apparently stolen

How to know you are from a small town.....
You know when you open up your hometown paper (or go to the website) & most of the news involves your relatives. A little bit of good & a litttle bit of bad. This was about my Brother-in-law. Wouldn't you just love to know who took it & look them in the eyes & ask WHY? To steal right from a Baptist Association office.
Here are 2 other articles about it & one below the picture.

The Weekly Post

Have you seen this tractor? The Sand Mountain Baptist Association Disaster Relief Team recently had this tractor stolen off their premises. For more information on the theft, see this week's edition of The Weekly Post.

‘Little Deere’ loader apparently stolen

A small tractor that has been used to help countless families in need has been stolen from the Sand Mountain Baptist Association.
According to David Patty, Director of Missions for the Sand Mountain Baptist Association, the small John Deere tractor the association uses in disaster relief was stolen this past weekend from the Sand Mountain Baptist Associational Office under a garage.
The trailer it was sitting on was also stolen. The association reported the theft to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office on Monday."Our disaster relief team has used 'little deere' all over the country to help people, and now someone has stolen it," Patty said.
"It is a sad day indeed."The tractor is a John Deere compact tractor model 4100 with a front loader model 410.
The front loader has been modified to aid in debris removal.
The trailer is a 16 foot Lone Wolf flat bed.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the Jackson County Sheriff's Office at 574-2610.

Update on my Uncle that was hurt on the job.

Lewis back at work after injury
By Dewayne Patterson
The Daily Sentinel
Published February 4, 2009
Larry Lewis, a deputy at the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, had never been out of work more than three days, other than vacation time, before December of last year.
That changed on a Sunday night in Section on Dec. 21, 2008. That night, while directing traffic on Alabama Highway 35 as members of the Section Fire Department battled a structure fire, Lewis was struck by a vehicle.
Lewis suffered two broken legs, a concussion, bruised sternum and several lacerations. Tuesday, Lewis, 54, was finally able to return to work, on restrictive duty, in the sheriff's office."I'm thrilled to death to be back," Lewis said. "I consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world not to be hurt any worse."
Lewis spent two days in Huntsville Hospital before spending the next several weeks at home recuperating. He said he doesn't remember the accident."We're proud to have him back," said Chief Deputy Doyle York.
"He'll be on limited duties for awhile, and hopefully be back to 100 percent in the next few weeks.
"Lewis, who has been employed with the sheriff's office since 2003, said one of the main reasons he was able to return to work was the many thoughts and prayers he received, in addition to the numerous phone calls from people checking on him.

Deputy recovering from injuries

The Daily Sentinel
By Dewayne Patterson

Published December 24, 2008

Chief Deputy Doyle York of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday an injured deputy should be home for Christmas.
Deputy Larry Lewis is recovering from injuries suffered after being struck by a vehicle Sunday night in Section.
According to Sheriff Dennis Miller, deputies from his office were directing traffic while the Section Fire Department answered a call nearby.
Miller said a female driver came off a side street onto Highway 35 before striking Lewis.
“We don’t know if she panicked,” said Miller. “We don’t really know what happened yet.”
York said state troopers are still investigating the incident. Though Miller is not releasing the driver’s name, he has said she had outstanding warrants on some misdemeanor charges in Marshall County, including driving with a suspended license.
Lewis, who has been employed with the sheriff’s office since 2003, suffered two broken legs, injuries to his head, chest and rib areas, leaving him badly bruised with several cuts as well.
He was transported to Huntsville Hospital Sunday night.
York said Lewis was expected to be released Tuesday from the hospital.
“We’re hoping he gets to come,” said York. “I talked to him today.
He’s in good spirits and ready to get home.”

Pray for my Uncle

(My mother w/Larry Paul)

I got a call from my mother this morning that my Uncle Larry Paul was taken to Huntsville Hospital. He is a police officer for Jackson County in my hometown. He was injured on the job last night.

From what I heard he was directing traffic because of a house fire & a lady that grew impatient tried to go around to get away & hit him. She was wanted on some other charges so at the moment I believe she is sitting in the pokey.

My mother said he busted the windshield out when he hit, it broke both his legs & it did something to his lungs. Everything seems to not be life threatening but it is serious. Alot of rehab ahead I imagine. I hope to see him this weekend. He is a special Uncle to me. My dad passed away a few months before I married. Larry Paul walked me down the aisle & gave me away. You never forget those things. Thanks Larry Paul. I love you.

Riley Corbitt - Heavens Newest Angel

I received some really sad news yesterday. My cousins little girl Riley passed away. The Lord had put her here on this earth for a while to touch the hearts of many but He was ready for her to come to Him now. She passed away around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. I did not get to see Riley as much as I would like to have living away from my hometown. You could always ask about her & everyone could give you updates.

Here is an article that was in my hometown newspaper about her explaining her disease.

The Daily Sentinel
Published March 25, 2006
Roy and Paula Corbitt of Woodville are living every parent’s worst nightmare. Instead of watching their beautiful 3-year-old daughter, Riley, grow and thrive each day, learning new skills and exploring the world around her, they are watching their child regress, slowly losing the milestones she had already reached.
Paula & Riley
Riley is in the grips of a degenerative disease that has ravaged her body for all of her young life and is expected to claim her life within the next few years.Riley has fought hard from the beginning of her life. Born at 35 weeks, she turned an ash gray color the day before she was supposed to come home from the hospital. Riley was moved to the neonatal unit for special medical attention. During this period, the baby would suddenly stop breathing. She was examined and found to have jaundice with an enlarged liver and spleen.
When the doctors were able to control her jaundice, Riley was sent home and followed up with a gastrologist in Huntsville. At the age of 2 months, Riley was sent to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham where doctors repaired three hernias and performed a liver biopsy. The doctor diagnosed Riley as having neonatal hepatitis. Her parents were told she would outgrow the condition within a year, and doctors prescribed medications.
She never outgrew her symptoms; in fact, they only grew worse.Shortly before Riley turned 2, doctors recommended that she receive a liver transplant because her condition had turned into cirrhosis. Paula researched her options and requested that Riley be sent to Emory for the transplant. Her parents met with the transplant team and were preparing for the operation when Dr. Romero decided to test her for Niemann-Pick’s disease since Riley had several symptoms.
The four main symptoms of Niemann-Pick’s disease are an enlarged lived, an enlarged spleen, jaundice and palsy of the eyes. The only symptom that Riley does not exhibit is the palsy.Riley underwent a liver biopsy and skin biopsy and was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick’s disease a little over a month later.
Paula explained that Niemann-Pick’s disease is a genetic disorder. The only way for a child to have the disease is for both parents to carry the gene for it, and even then there is only a 25 percent chance that the child will have the disease.
There are also different types of the disease, which are characterized from A to C, depending on life expectancy. For example, children with Type A will normally die before reaching age 2. Riley has Type C, which means she only has a life expectancy of 5 or 10 years.
The disease is characterized by the inability to metabolize cholesterol and other lipids properly within cells. Consequently, excessive amounts of cholesterol and other lipids accumulate in the liver, spleen and brain, causing the brain and other organs to deteriorate.
Paula said the disease is already progressing rapidly in Riley. At her MRI in October, the doctor told them that lesions have begun forming on her brain, signifying damage and loss of brain tissue.
Her parents have already begun to notice her decline. A year ago, she was able to walk unassisted, but now she needs support to be able to move around. Her speech is also deteriorating.“Riley won’t go forward anymore,” Paula said. “She is starting to go backward.”
At her March 7 appointment, there was no new loss of brain tissue but the muscles in her back and throat have begun to weaken. Her spleen is now enlarged to her navel.
The disease also causes Riley to have tremors which are helped by an experimental drug called Cevesca. Although the drug is not FDA approved, it is her only hope in slowing the storage of cholesterol on her brain. Paula said that although the side effects cause additional problems for Riley, the medication does help control the tremors.
The future does not hold much hope for Riley. Doctors say she will eventually be bed-ridden and need a feeding tube, unable to walk, talk, or even swallow. Niemann-Pick’s disease is incurable. The doctors have offered her parents no hope for a recovery. “It slowly kills everything,” Paula said. “We were told all there is (to help) is the Cevesca, but they don’t know if it will help.” A liver transplant is not even an option now. “They won’t giver her a liver transplant because they won’t give a healthy liver to a child who won’t get any better,” Paula said.
In the midst of this seemingly hopeless situation, there is joy and a great deal of love. Riley and her family recently lived out every child’s dream – going to Disney World – through the Make A Wish and Give Kids the World foundations. Paula said Riley had a wonderful time, and she especially enjoyed riding the carousel and train.
The family also plans to travel to Dallas in August for the National Niemann-Pick’s Disease Foundation Family Conference. There, they will be able to meet with doctors and researchers, as well as other families who are living with the disease. The community is also embracing Riley and trying to raise money to help the family deal with medical expenses. Just one bottle of Cevesca costs $3,000, and that does not even begin to take into account the medical expenses that have added up during Riley’s young life.
A benefit for Riley will be held April 8 at Woodville High School gymnasium from noon until 8 p.m. There will be a gospel and bluegrass concert, a raffle, chili supper, cake auction and silent auction. Many items have been donated for the auction, including an Alabama football, a Shaun Alexander football, grills, quilts, televisions and much more. A special fund has also been set up at Regions Bank for monetary donations for Riley. The money will be used to help pay for her medical expenses.
Riley has a way of touching everyone’s heart. Despite the gravity of the situation and her physical decline, Riley wakes up every morning with a smile on her face and is a delight in the lives of everyone who knows her – or just has the pleasure of meeting her.
<>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <><
This is the statement I read that sticks to me each time I think of Riley.
"Riley has a way of touching everyone’s heart.
Despite the gravity of the situation and her physical decline, Riley wakes up every morning with a smile on her face and is a delight in the lives of everyone who knows her – or just has the pleasure of meeting her."

Jump back a day!

Well can I actually get two post in one night?
I posted about my day but now the weekend.
We still have Cub Scout popcorn sell going on & had another 3 hour shift at Sam's Club to sell. The boys actually did pretty good which was my two & one of my Tigers from my den. They stalked errr...waited outside the exit door for customers leaving & ask if they would like to help support the cub scouts by buying popcorn. Some people ignored them but some nice people actually stepped over & bought. One guy actually said "he did not recognize the Scouts". Don't even get me started. That's another post in itself. Well we were tired & cold & finally got home about 9:30 that night & we were T-I-R-E-D. The boys want to know can we do it again Saturday............NO NO NO. All my two did was fight & punch each other the whole time & run everywhere not paying attention. One of my sisters has two boys & I ask her ALL the time "please tell me it gets better." I miss baby dolls & doing nails! Boys are not wired that way. Thank God.

Hubby was home all weekend. Before the weather turns to cold we hoped to get the 4 wheelers out & take to the land. Chris' had been acting up for a bit. Hubby got it out early Saturday to do a quick thing to it but nothing here is simple. He was stumped so it is off to the repair people. Here we go again! He gave up, we got the other one loaded & headed to a friends house to pick up his big 4 wheeler. Wait, we need to switch the little one to the back of the truck because both will not fit on the trailer, get gas in a can, air in the tire, the boys are hungry, We are never going to get there. We are trying to find a place in Pontotoc to pull the trailer in safely to get gas & guess what blue lights behind us. Yes, a city cop. We must have attracted attention looking for a station. No my husband was speeding. He didn't argue. He was. Proof of insurance. Guess what not in the truck. It was our leased vehicle we were turning back in so all of it was removed from the glove box. We decided to buy it instead but none of the papers were put back in. I guess the officer thought we looked honest enough & let that part slip. I now have it at my side ready to go back in the truck tomorrow. Well we try to proceed onto the land. We get there & are met by some wild turkey crossing the driveway in. Pic attached. We are now at the spot we will call home hopefully soon. All is well in the Pa'tty World. All three guys got muddy. Chris even had muddy underwear from riding. That is some serious mud riding. I weed eated around some trees, cleaned off my cats grave who I still miss something fierce, played with my toy (Nikon camera), road a 4 wheeler through the woods & back out & took a deep breath because by that time the sun was going down. Turned out to be a good Saturday ticket & all.

At church the next morning with Operation Christmas Child in full swing I have had things I have had to do. We picked that day to give out the empty boxes that Samaritans Purse provides. Only about 250 were passed out. We had a really great time doing it. Pic attached. Hopefully they come back all full to send over seas.

Our 2 boys both have b'days this month & their grandparents sent them some money that was burning a hole in their pockets. Sunday after church we went to Wally World to spend that hot money. The boys both got toys since you know they don't have any. The pitiful things. S-P-O-I-L-E-D to the bone. Man time is passing quick. The boys are 7 & 11 this month. Our daughter turned 22 this past summer. Different seasons of our lives. Changes come. We deal. Me not as much. I do deal with it but in some ways I look back & wish for the old times. People are what I miss the most. Father, mothers, sisters & nephews that have passed. Time heals wounds. A blogger friend is having to bury a nephew soon. What I read of him all says he was a great guy & you wonder why was it his time. But it is God's time not ours. God has plans for him & he needed him now. My heart breaks for the family having to say their goodbye's. Patty I will be thinking of you. Please keep this sweet family in your prayers.
Well it is getting late. I have bible study tomorrow. I still need to finish the booth tomorrow. My husband comes back from a quick business trip that he left early this morning on. My oldest son has a b'day & I need to get a fire lit under me to get some painting finished around here. Got to get this house sold. Now I will try to download some pics for you to view. Old Pictures

Click on picture for larger view

While walking around during "First Sunday" I got a picture of my hometown square from a vendor by the name of Garry Morgan. I love pictures of my hometown. Mostly older ones.

The Scottsboro Boys Trial occured on First Monday April 1931.

Another type I love is to go back & get "after" pictures when I find an old one. My hometown square is still quite active.
This is the old Bynum's grocery on Broad Street when it was a 2 lane. I lived across the street. Then change comes along & a Sherwin Williams is built. It is still there today.
The city has a project that you can buy a brick for the gazebo project on the square. My husband & BIL's bought one for their mother. I have to say I was a bit disappointed that it was dirty & not laid very well. I hope after the next batch is put down they redo some.

My mother was in desperate need of cleaning out her outside shed & ran across a few of these old postcards of my dad's. We spent a great deal of time out somewhere or another with my dad making pictures. He ran Boots' Photo Service off "The Square". I sure did spend alot of my time there it seems.
On the back of the postcard reads......."The late Calvin McGee, Chief of the Creek Indians East of the Miss. River with Long White eagle at TA-CO-BET (Aug. 1969). This was Chief McGee's last visit to "God's Mountain". Located six miles east of Scottsboro, on Highway 40.

Scout Day at Huntsville Space & Rocket

Chris (Webelo 2 rank), Me, & Matthew (Tiger rank)

Pack 85 Tupelo, MS
Alot of our pack went to the Space & Rocket Center this past Saturday. The church vans transported alot of the group & several took their own cars. They left that morning & came back later that afternoon. I took my own vehicle & stayed the weekend back home. I am SOOO tired. I stay busy the whole time I am there. Since Jeff did not get to go my mom & sister went & spent Saturday with us at the Space & Rocket Center.
Later the boys & I ran by & spent some time with Jeff's dad (my in-laws). My baby sister called when I was about to leave from there & wanted to know if I wanted to run to Wally World with her. We went & did the Southern thing of shopping & running into people & talking & catching up. We left there & drove around & waited on my niece to get off work at the pizza place. We made her & her friends take us cruising around "The Square". We lead very pathetic lives to hang out with 19 year olds. We just had to see if it had changed any since we were that age. It has not just to let you know. By the way the only reason they let us go was because I let her drive my vehicle & it was my gas that made the many trips around "The Square" & town. The reason we finally went home.....the old people in the back seat was about to fall asleep (my sister & I). Boy were we tired & it was not even midnight.
Pastor appreciation was the next day at my sister's church & they were honoring their pastor that performed my wedding years & many years ago.
In my hometown they have a Trade Day the "First Sunday" & "First Monday" of each month around "The Square". Not much was going on but it was still fun walking around & remembering a place I walked for as long as I remember. If you go & don't run into someone you know you must not be looking. I seen my husbands neice & her little family I rarely get a chance to see while back home. We tired of walking & went after lunch. Then back to my sisters to pack up & leave town finally around 5:00. Engine light came on so that threw my time off a bit. (My neice did not tighten the gas cap after she put gas in for me)
Got back here to MS finally around 9:00pm.
Now back to real life back here & got to get busy with Operation Christmas Child at church.
Off to cook dinner now.
More later.

T-R-O-U-B-L-E

I told you I would be in trouble.
A Northern storm just blew through Mississippi by the name of Polly. My sister read my post of her being next of a picture of her the same day in a swim suit. I have always loved the picture but she hates it. It was the seventies, she had long blond hair & was gorgeous. We Potter's usually speak our minds & don't leave anything for wondering. Well I value my sisters love & being family so I chose the option to NOT post. Actually she chose it. I have plenty of pics made of me looking really really homely that I know she has copies of & that I wish to not be out in the WWW / World Wide Web. She sent me some pictures she would have her rather's. I told her she would not have to fall down or get sick or have a birthday for me to post one & I would love to put her picture on. I am rather proud of my pretty sisters!
We rarely get the chance to see one another except for reunions & funerals but with that invention of the telephone we get caught up quick. Today was a catch up day. I love my calls with her. Different generations of growing up but we love hearing about one anothers lives. She was 26 when I was born but the years come together when we get a chance to visit. I wish for a future of her life now & she sees her past in me. That of being a busy wife & mother. So many times I have written letters in my head to her to let her know how very special she is to me but it never makes it to paper. Growing up I always loved her visits. It meant having more laughter in the house from such a godly Christian woman as she is. I didn't really understand that then but now as an adult she is what I want to strive for. Birthday cards from her meant she was thinking of me way down in Bama & always money in each one. She never missed a birthday & if she did a card saying it was late always came. I still have some of them. Tons of memories fill my head & they are all the greatest of my growing up years. I love you Polly!

She has a challenge for anyone to reach that milestone.

She has to have some secret she could pass along!

My big sister

Please say a special prayer for one of my sisters. Here is what was posted on my family site. I added in red letters beside the names to let you see who is who.

"Well I think Mom (my sister) had a really good birthday. Me (my neice) and the boy's, (Kirby, Kerry and Tate (my great nephews & great great nephew) and Amber (my great neice) went down and then later on Connie and Paulette (my neices) went. Larry (my nephew) called her and they talked awhile. She got something yesterday that she's never had in her 79 years. Her, Paulette and Kenneth (my BIL) went to the bank. They get out and started inside, Kenneth takes off and Mom goes after him. She's always scared he's going to fall. Well she slipped and she fell face first right in front of the bank. An ambulance came and carried her to the E.R. She's got a slight concussion, she's got a black eye. She's got a broken bone under her eye and she fractered her wrist in two places. She cut her finger above her mothers ring and her hand swelled so bad they had to cut her ring off. Her knees are bruised really bad. She's got a small cut beside her eye and some bruising on her forehead. She's got and appointment with Dr. Griffin next week to put a cast on. It's swelled to bad to do anything now. Her cuts wasn't bad enough to be sewn up. Thank goodness. She's really hurting today. It is her right hand so she can't do a whole lot. Gotta get in the bed I'll try to get you posted. Oh what she got was three broken bones. She's never had one.

Happy Birthday Sis

She will kill me for this picture but I have always loved it.
I can't help I have beautiful sisters.
Polly--yours is next (that one I will die for for sure!!)

Made at her mother's grave. We all have the same father.
